Child from Island of Hope
Mike Ronald has been in adoption programme since year 2020 and he goes to school Island of Hope Humanist Mixed Boarding School.
City, quarter: Kotieno Oyugis Kanyango
State: Kenya
Mother: Maurine Auma Otieno, birth 1985, casual labourer
Description of the situation: Mike is the first born in the family of three children (siblings Criskelly 2010 and Tonny 2013). The father who was the only family bread winner died in 2012 leaving the mother with the children to feed and pay school fees to the children. After the death of the father, the in-laws didn’t want Mike’s mother in their family and they decided to chase her away together with her children and took everything from her. The mother then went to town where now she lives with her children, she only does cleaning and washing to people to earn an income. Apart from Criskelly and the siblings, they also live with their cousin who is an orphan. The income she gets is little which can not even pay for the rent. Family´s average is 2,400 KES per month – about 24 EUR. The 5 members of the family live in a rental one roomed mud house. They get their water from the lake, use kerosene lamp for lighting and firewood or charcoal for cooking. Mike is doing well at the moment. In 2020, he will be in 7th class. Mike likes Kiswahili, Mathematics and English. He would like to be a doctor at the end of his studies. The boy also likes playing football and singing. He will join the orphanage in our community centre Island of Hope since January 2020. Adoption of this child costs 16.800 CZK/ 660 EUR per year (the amount covers school fees, accommodation, food and governess in an orphanage as well).
