Dear friends, thank you all very much for your support so far, for establishing new partnerships, and for the wave of solidarity and support from all individual and corporate donors. Great support is also coming from Kenya – most of the clinic’s staff immediately stood up for its rescue and continued providing medical care to patients without claiming salaries. This has helped us bridge several more months, but it is still not enough to cover the full year of operations. We therefore continue our efforts to save the clinic and thank you for your further help and for sharing this appeal.
The Island of Hope Clinic is the only functioning clinic on the island. The staff consists of local employees, and interns – doctors and medical students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia – also come to the clinic. The clinic is licensed to test and treat tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and to vaccinate children. In addition to treating illnesses and injuries, births take place here and a prenatal clinic is available. The clinic also provides preventive check-ups for children enrolled in the African Child Sponsorship program and promotes health awareness among local residents. As part of prevention, lectures are also held in schools on hygiene, first aid, sex education, and HIV.
The clinic is properly registered in Kenya, and its support has also been approved within the government state insurance system (SHA). However, the system does not function properly in Kenya, and the Kenyan government owes us approved payments in the system for almost the entire year, which has put us in a very difficult situation. For a detailed overview, the complete operation of the clinic costs CZK 100,000 per month; about CZK 40,000 is collected from patients, so the amount missing to ensure its continued operation is approximately CZK 60,000 per month. If the SHA system began to function reliably in Kenya, the clinic could become self-sufficient.
Who will we help?
We will help the entire very poor fishing community of Rusinga Island in Kenya (about 30,000 inhabitants) – especially orphans, their guardians, single mothers, elderly people, children – for whom access to healthcare is very difficult.
How exactly does the clinic help?
- Total number of treated patients: 18,774
- Hospitalized patients: 407
- Patients with HIV in active treatment: 7,683
- Patients diagnosed with tuberculosis: 155
- Registered pregnant women in prenatal care: 500
- Children born: 74
- Registered mothers in pediatric care: 483
- Mothers and women attending the family planning clinic: 987
- Fully vaccinated children: 2,125
What specifically will the funds from this fundraiser be used for?
We need funds for full 24-hour operation: medicines, medical supplies, and salaries of local staff (1 doctor, 3 nurses, 1 laboratory technician, 1 pharmacist, 1 cleaner, 1 receptionist).
Every donation makes a great difference. Every amount represents concrete help. Help us continue work that has been saving health and lives for 16 years.
Thank you for caring about the fate of these people.
