The clinic on Rusinga Island has been helping since 2010 and is the only functioning clinic on the island. Since September 2019, when the last project ended, it has been operating solely on contributions from individual and corporate donors. In order to maintain its operation and provide assistance to 20,000 patients a year, we need to find additional partners and supporters who will support doctors, purchase medicines, and keep the clinic running with regular monthly or annual contributions… Will we find them?
This is the only functioning clinic on the island. The staff consists of local employees, and the clinic also welcomes interns – doctors and medical students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The clinic is licensed to test and treat TB, malaria, HIV--AIDS, and vaccinate children. In addition to treating illnesses and injuries, the clinic also delivers babies and operates a prenatal clinic. The clinic also conducts preventive check-ups for children enrolled in the African Child Adoption Program and promotes health education among local residents. As part of prevention efforts, lectures on hygiene, first aid, sex education, and HIV are also held in schools.

What makes our facility unique is that we offer all services at an affordable price and operate 24 hours a day.Our facility has qualified staff who know how to care for the patients who come to us every day.
Maureen Juma, director and chief physician of the clinic.
I like the clinic because it is affordable, and when I pay my money, I never run out of medicine, said patient Millicent Atieno. The patient came to us today with malaria, we did all the tests and provided her with antimalarials, added Maureen.
I like this clinic because they have a helpful and friendly reception, and the doctor has good communication skills with patients, said ano ther patient, Samson Onyango, who came in with the parasitic disease schistosomiasis (bilharzia). We did a stool analysis on the patient and prescribed deworming medication.
Our clinic is a lifeline for the island, bringing health services directly to the community, reducing the need for costly transportation, and ensuring that timely care is always within reach.
Julius Kinaga, coordinator of the long-distance adoption healthcare program for children.
The Centrum Narovinu clinic on Rusinga Island in Kenya is unique in that it complements a non-profit community centre, which, thanks to its orphanage, kindergarten, elementary school, and boarding high school, gives up to 500 children and students a chance at a better life through education every year. The clinic serves a catchment area of 10,000 inhabitants, where, in addition to basic procedures, it also provides vital care for patients with HIV/AIDS (a widespread disease on the island) or malaria, and offers a 24-hour maternity ward. The clinic thus plays a vital and much-needed role in the area, not only for children, students, and the entire community centre, including foreign volunteers, but also for the local poor community, which would otherwise have no access to affordable basic healthcare.
David Pakizer, a volunteer at the Centrum Narovinu, who was at the clinic in 2022 as a part of his internship as a PhD student in clinical neuroscience at the University of Ostrava.
The Island of Hope Clinic has been helping in Kenya for 15 years, and we believe that with your help, we will be able to maintain it and continue to help. We will succeed if we find other partners who will support the doctors or the running of the clinic, and other supporters who will support it with any one-off or regular donation.
