Kenya with Centre Narovinu

On Monday the 26th of May and on Tuesday the 27th of May we had really nice and interesting visit, Ms Simona Heřtusová from Centre Narovinu, with whom we have worked together since 2008. This year, we decided to adopt one Kenyan boy Jerold Onyango. To Jerold’s education we contribute together thanks to money we earned at Christmas markets, where we sell our own manufactured goods. Traditionally a lot of parents, grandparents and friends take part in this project.

The presentation about Kenya has been realized in all advanced grades in our school. We talked about all different tribes living in Kenya, about everyday life in rural areas and in cities as well. We saw few short videos about children living in slums Kibera or in village nearby the Lake Victoria. Many children were surprised by the different quality of live in specific areas. We also learned a lot about the educational system in Kenya.

The presentation was followed by few workshops of various topics. Younger pupils learned something about Kenya’s music and they could sing a song Jambo Kenya or try traditional Kenya’s clothes. Older pupils deepened their knowledge about projects in developing countries and they learned new shocking information about worldwide expenses on education, food, potable water but about weapons and drugs as well.

After the two-day project we continued with the topic of Kenya in some classes of English language and we elaborate posters, which thematised Kenya: “My trip to Africa”, “One Day in Kenya”, “Kenya”. Pupils could use the knowledge gained from the presentation.

The project was really successful and we hope to meet Ms Heřtusová soon again.
