Hand-carved chess in traditional African design is made by Kisi stonemasons from the area of Tabaka village, the only place in Kenya where the stone called talc from which the chess is made is mined. They are purchased directly from their manufacturers. The stone is polished and hand-painted. The height of the chess pieces is 2 to 8 cm.
Dimensions: 25 × 25 cm, weight: 1.7 kg
Soapstone is mined in large mines surrounding the area of Kisii. Mined talc is then delivered to carvers who carve sculptures from the natural stone for new business markets. Once the products are cut, they dispossess sharp edges with sandpaper dipped in water, polish to a high luster, and eventually adorn hand-painted African motifs in vibrant colors with engraved elements.
