Project area background
Maryland Academy and Community Center was founded by Dandora community in the year 2000. It was to uplift the community in Dandora sub location - Embakasi division in Nairobi province of Kenya. The school was registered in the year 2003 with the ministry of education and started focusing on addressing the illiteracy problems of the local community by providing basic education to the poor children.
The school now has a total number of 300 children. We have children in:
- Baby class
- Standard one to four
We have a total number of ten teachers and two support net staff. We have eleven rooms rented for kshs 15,000 per month.
We have a big problem of management of the school because most of the children are not able to pay the school fees and they come from poor families.
We have some children who are being supported by Center Narovinu and the money we get pays the teacher’s salary.
- To buy a land and build a new school with well-equipped classrooms and necessary learning materials.
- There will be spacious play ground to ensure that the pupils are fully engaged in physical education
- To build well latrines and water points like boreholes for drinking and washing hands after toilet ensure high hygiene standards.
To buy land somewhere else and start to build a new school. At the moment the place we are using is a rented place and doesn’t have enough playing ground due to increasing number of children we need more space .
