Community centre Island of Hope on Rusinga Island in Kenya

The main goal of the project is to create a self-sufficient and sustainable community centre, which would provide very poor people and children from the area of Kamasengre on Rusinga Island with high-quality education and basic health care. The project started in 2003. Nowadays, the centre is daily attended by 400 children. A part of the centre is also an orphanage for 72 children from 3 to 18 years of age, a kindergarten for 90 children with the Montessori teaching method, an elementary school for 300 children, an educational centre with a library, a work room for working soapstone, a health clinic for about 10 000 patients from the area, and a farm with an irrigation system, fruit trees, fish and poultry breeding. At the moment, a boarding high school for about 120 students is being built.
