Celebrate with us! Students of a newly built high school have finished their first trimester.

A successful development project of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in Kenya.

How is the school doing without canes, grades, uniforms and with a respectful approach to students?

Dear friends, we would like to invite you to a press conference – African morning on Wednesday May 4th at 9.30 a.m.

Cafe Art & Coffee, Na Příkopě 860/24, Prague 1
Presentation – Photos – Videos – Refreshments
Direct trade coffee and tea from Kenya

The press conference will be attended by:

  • Dana Feminová – executive director of Center Narovinu and the head coordinator of the project Island of Hope
  • Barbora Munzarová – an actress and one of the adoptive parents in the program of long distance adoption
  • sponsors from a private sector, for example Park Lane international school.

The project of high school came into existence with the support of SlovakAid. In the first phase, a building with 2 classrooms, a lab for scientific subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), 1 dormitory for boys, 1 dormitory for girls, and an administrative building with offices and a teachers´ room are being built. The first students started their studies there in 2016, in May they will start their second trimester.

Community centre Island of Hope on Rusinga Island in Kenya

The main goal of the project is to create a self-sufficient and sustainable community centre, which would provide very poor people and children from the area of Kamasengre on Rusinga Island with high-quality education and basic health care. The project started in 2003. Nowadays, the centre is daily attended by 400 children. A part of the centre is also an orphanage for 72 children from 3 to 18 years of age, a kindergarten for 90 children with the Montessori teaching method, an elementary school for 300 children, an educational centre with a library, a work room for working soapstone, a health clinic for about 10 000 patients from the area, and a farm with an irrigation system, fruit trees, fish and poultry breeding. At the moment, a boarding high school for about 120 students is being built.

Meeting Rose

In 2015, we decided to adopt 5-year old Rose from Rusinga Island. We had been planning to visit equatorial Africa for quite some time, but only after we had adopted Rose, our plans became more concrete. In the past, we had adopted a different girl from India through the project of long-distance adoption organized by another charitable organization. When she grew up and didn´t need our help anymore, we decided to join in the project of adoption organized by Center Narovinu. We appreciated that Center Narovinu, unlike the previous organization, makes it possible for the adoptive parents to go visit their adopted children. So, in the fall of 2015, we decided to make a trip to Kenya to visit the school Island of hope and meet „our“ Rose...

The school itself is located about 15 kilometres from a bridge along the lakeshore. After a little bit of initial confusion, we were driven there on dusty roads by a local motorcycle/taxi driver for about 50 Kč. At the school, they had already been expecting us, and we were accommodated in a nice house with a private bathroom very close to the lake. After we got settled we found out that we arrived just in time for the first school day. We were quite an attraction for the local children. The school complex is located by the lakeshore and it consists mainly of classrooms, teacher´s rooms, dorms and a little kitchen. There is no dining hall for the children; they eat wherever they can find a place to sit. There is a new building being built behind the kitchen that will serve as a high school. On the school premises, there are also a few smaller ponds that are used for fish breeding, a poultry farm, and a few vegetable gardens that are used to supply the school kitchen.

During the tour of the school, we handed out candy to the kids, which made them really happy. Unfortunately, we didn´t have enough for everyone but at least all the youngest kids got some. But the children got even more excited about other gifts that we brought them- a football and a Frisbee. „Our“ Rose was initially a little scared of us which was quite understandable considering it was her very first school day and at the same time two white strangers came to look at her. Her initial fear turned into real horror when we walked her home after school to meet her parents and give them a few little presents. She probably thought we wanted to take her home with us, poor thing. Rose´s parents had already been expecting us. They were altogether really nice. They even prepared a delicious Nile perch for us that Rose´s father, who is a fisherman, caught himself. At that point, Rose slowly started to understand, that we were not going to take her home with us, on the contrary, that we even brought her some presents.

For the first time, something like a forced smile appeared on her face. We spent about two days on the island playing with the kids, walking around the island, fishing, and talking with the locals. For most of them, meeting white men was still quite unusual, but they were all very nice. Towards the end of our stay, even Rose got used to us, and at the time of our departure she even ran out of the classroom to say goodbye and thank you to us which was very brave and also incredibly cute of her. During the whole stay on the Island of Hope, all the local employees were really nice and helpful with everything that we needed. We got to see with our own eyes and also hear from the school headmaster Josh, that the money we send to support Rose´s education are really used for this very purpose.

From the beginning until the dream came true

When I was a young volunteer for Humanist Centre Narovinu in 2008 I invited Martina Slavíčková, the main coordinator in Slovakia at that time, to a grammar school in Liptovský Mikuláš to lead a seminar about development cooperation, global issues and projects of the Centre Narovinu. I had no idea what kind of impression it will leave in my classmates. They came to me with an idea to adopt a child in Kenya together. At first I wasn´t really excited about this idea even though it was a great thought. It meant a big responsibility for a group of teenagers without steady income. After several days of thinking we finally decided to financially support Victor from Nairobi in his study at primary school. It´s been 7 years since then. We all went to different universities or jobs and that´s why I support Victor by myself with occasional help from my old classmates.

Victor expressed a hope and prayers in every letter to be able to see each other face to face. This desire was mutual and God heard our voice when SlovakAid Agency approved a project of Slovak organization (Dobrá novina) which chose me for three months volunteering in Kenya. I will always remember that sunny Sunday in June when I first saw the 21 year old boy Victor coming to meet me with the local coordinator Elias. It was a little embarrassing at the beginning. Thousand questions which I had in my head just disappeared. I wanted to enjoy the exceptional moment – my dream has become a reality.

Our first meeting also meant a first time in shopping center for Victor and a first time when he ate pizza. This day was full of new experiences for both of us. We finally had the opportunity to tell each other everything we couldn´t fit into our letters. After few hours we said goodbye, we exchanged our phone numbers and agreed on trip to the center of the city. Despite the fact that Victor grew up in Nairobi he´s been in the city center only once.

I left Kenya with a lot of different feelings and impressions. One of them was kind of a mixture of satisfaction and pride. Victor is the only one from his family and his neighborhood who made it to the college. He studies electrical engineering. He has his own dreams, visions and plans. Victor wants to return what he received and help to the others. He works really hard and he says that nothing will be achieved by sitting and complaining. He is a young man in the right place.

Even though I had some doubts 7 years ago, today I don´t regret at all that my classmates talked me into the adoption and we became a part of a meaningful project like Long distance adoption. Many thanks to all those who contributed to Victor´s study – Martina Slavíčková and other Czech and Slovak coordinators of Centre Narovinu.

Just as last year we would like to apply for 2% of your taxes, that only you decide about. Thank you, we do need them.
Within the scope of the development support of the Slovak Republic, we managed to obtain a grant of 280,000 € for a construction of a boarding school at the Rusinga Island of the lake Victoria in western Kenya. Our own participation equals to 10%, which means that we have to secure over 30,000€ from our own sources. The boarding school will enable continuity of the education at our community centre Island of Hope, where we already operate a 8-year primary school, a nursery school, an orphanage for 80 children, as well as a 24-hour medical centre. We also provide daily catering for 400 children.

Personal meetings with candidates will be conducted in early February and the job start be rught after the end of the hiring process as soon as possible – we expect during February 2016. Organization Name: Centrum Narovinu, o.p.s. Contact: Simona Heřtusová, Address: Sokolská 32 Praha 2, E-mail: simona.hertusova@adopceafrika.cz , WWW: www.adopceafrika.cz

Philip Odero Obuya, the director of the High School from Rusinga Island, which is prepared by Centrum Narovinu to be opened in February 2016, arrived to Prague. He is here thanks to the partner school Park Lane, which supports the project, and Philip is now gaining experinece with modern teaching methods.

Project of the high school has been established with the support of SlovakAid. In the first phase a building with two classrooms, a laboratory for technical subjects (physics, chemistry and biology), 1 building of boy’s dormitory, 1 building of girl’s dormitory and an administration building with offices and a staff room, will be built. First students could sit behind their school desks since February 2016.

The project began in 2003 and a kinderkarten, a primary school, an orphanage, an educational center with a library, a health clinic and a farm are currently part of it. Every day there is already taken care of more than 400 needy children and 10 000 patients of the community of the Rusinga Island.

The main goal of the project is to create a self-sufficient and sustainable community center that would provide an access to quality education with a respectful attitude and basic medical care for very poor people and children from the Kamasengre area on Rusinga Island.

The project of “The Island of Hope” is home for 80 orphans and 320 other children from the poorest and neediest families of the small island in the middle of Lake Victoria, who attend the kindergarten and school here every day. Since February 2016 there will be students from a new high school which is just built as well.

The temporary kitchen is really not enough anymore, so the completion of the new kitchen and dining room has become a priority and it would be needed it to finish is latest in April 2016.

We managed to put together a financial amount for the construction which started in December 2015 from donations and charity events in recent years and sales of coffee and tea from Kenya. What is missing is the last amount of money that would allow the opening of the new kitchen and dining room for more than 500 small diners a day. Money for the equipment - tables, chairs, dishes, pots, boilers...

We are missing around CZK 200 000, - for equipment and successful completion.

Donate any amount and help us to brighten smiles on children's faces, for which already an egg and bread for breakfast and sugar in a tea is fulfillment of a big dream.

Children in the program of long-distance adoption and their families go through many  challenging life situations and they often write about them in the letters for the adoptive parents. If they are facing a very urgent problem, they usually directly contact the child´s coordinator and ask for advice.

If the coordinator, upon discussing the issue with the family, comes to the conclusion that the adoptive parents could be of some help in the case, the coordinator contacts the Czech office. We then together with the adoptive parent try to find the best way to help the child and the family.

For such cases, there is a possibility of an extra payment which is not directly connected to the child´s education and which lies beyond the program of long-distance adoption. The money that the adoptive parents send to their African children every trimester is used exclusively to cover the children’s´ tuition- but this payment is something extra. It is mostly used to cover unexpected medical expenses of the child or someone from his/her family, to pay a high school or university debt, to buy extra food, laptop for university students, or a bike for a child, that lives far away from school and has to commute many kilometres every day. First we always check with the Kenyan coordinators that the extra payment is really necessary and only then, if the adoptive parents also agree to it, the extra purchase can be realised.

It is necessary to say, that the Kenyan coordinators provide such services beyond their responsibilities in the project of long-distance adoption and the organisation takes a significant amount of their time and energy. The administration related to the growing number of extra payments is more and more demanding and that is why we have decided to introduce an administration fee of 6 % from the extra payment.

The minimum fee will be 30 Kč (1 EUR) and the maximum fee 1000 Kč (38 EUR).The extra payments thus help the children in the program of long-distance adoption but they are not a means of randomly improving the children´s life conditions. All the cases need to be very carefully evaluated.

In this way, thanks to an adoptive parent, we were able to help the family of Patrick Owino (51509) to build their own house. The family had had to pay a monthly rent and the adoptive parent decided to help the family buy their own property. Thanks to their payment of 30 000 Kč the family now has a clay house and one worry less.

Another story concerns a boy Chriswarena Ongei (51548) and his family. Since they live 7 kilometres from the lake, they have to use a pump in order to supply themselves with water. Unfortunately, one day the water pump broke and the family did not have enough financial means to repair it. Also in this case, an adoptive parent decided to help out and sent the family an extra payment of 12 000 Kč for which they were able to buy a new water pump. The family is very happy and grateful for this help. They also use the water for irrigating vegetables which they grow on a little field next to their house.

The last case concerns David Otieno Odongo (40216), Business Management and Administration graduate. David successfully finished his studies and his adoptive parent decided to support him in starting his career. David was left with some extra money after covering the tuition and his adoptive parent agreed that David can invest them. Based on a research he carried out in the slum where he lives, he decided to open a business which would be half electronics and half barbers´ shop. His adoptive parent liked the idea so nothing stood in the way of us sending David the extra money to help him start his business. He has been doing great. He keeps thorough records of the sold electronics. Thanks to the help of his adoptive parent, he is not only able to support himself but also his mother and sisters, who are still at school.

When Lenka Čapková asked me to write an article for the bulletin of Centre Narovinu about my journey to Kenya I didn't know how to write it. I thought that nobody would care which places I visited and what my feelings were. In Kenya I was keeping a travel diary and so I got the idea to write about the children and schools which I had seen.

My journey was strictly a private one to my adopted daugther. I didn't know that when I would visit other schools in Nairobi and Rusinga I will work as a minister of Centre Narovinu for which I actually work as a voluntary coordinator.

I will start with the visit to my adoptive daughter Diana Nyambury Wakhome, who is in fourth grade at catholic girls' school. The school, while declared with seat in Nairobi, was actually three and a half hour drive away from Nairobi. The visit was unannounced but I was lucky that at the moment of my arrival the girls had a break. The meeting with my ward lasted only about 10 to 15 minutes. When the driver, which took me there (he was a former student from African children adoption project by the way) asked her, if she was happy to see me, she said that she would jump out of happiness. I would too, but given my age I am not so sure if I would be successful. A week later I had the opportunity to visit the whole family and I have a very strong emotional feeling. Despite their poverty they prepared a great lunch and everybody, especially I, was overjoyed. One could have seen it it their eyes and the overall attitude towards me. I have to say that I, too, was really moved.

I had the oportunity to visit Ngando Praparatory School near Nairobi where the headmistress Mrs. Sophia Barongo showed me to all classes. Here my work as an half-oficial superior of organization Centre Narovinu started. When the headmistress introduced me in each classroom I had to say something to the children as well. The atmosphere was great and unrepeatable.

Something similar also happened during my visit to the school on Rusinga Island. I was not expecting that the entire school would align, one of the teachers would be introducing me, I would be having an official speech and also giving children the sweets that I brought them. During my three day visit each afternoon we were playing with the children. It was apparent by their facial expressions that they were really happy. I was happy as well. It really “got me” that the last evening the children sang and danced in my “honour” so that in the end the adults, even I, joined. I have to admit that I was indeed deeply moved.

In conclusion I would like to say that the children despite the uneasy conditions they have are really happy that they have adoptive parents, thanks to which they can attend school. They very much like their school, teachers and also their sponsors. This trip allowed me to meet new friends from the black continent, especially from Kenya, with whom I will be in touch in the future and who I hope to see in person at least one more time in Kenya or Prague.

I would like to thank to headmistress Mrs. Dana Feminová, who firmed up my journey and made possible to be in touch with the office of partnership organization Centre Narovinu in Kenya.

The interview with Ken Okongo, Head of Centrum Narovinu in Kenya, given during his visit to the Czech Republic in June.

As we promised in our e-bulletin June issue, here is the full version of our interview with Ken Okongo, Head of Centrum Narovinu in Kenya, given during his visit to the Czech Republic in June.

Do you like your job?

Over ten years is a very long time to be doing something that you don’t like?. I have always enjoyed the activities without a doubt. It gives me the possibility to connect with the realities in our society today.

How does your normal day looks like?

I’m not sure how normal is my normal day? but some very normal days I’m in the office from 8.30am to 5.30 pm or 6pm. Depending in the activities, such days when I’m in the office I will be solving payment issues and meeting beneficiaries coming to the office for some complicated cases that need my attention. Also I take those days in the office in updating legal issues related to the organization if there is need. On other normal days I’m in the field visiting our projects or beneficiary families.

What do you think about the adoption program?

For me adoption program is personal project that changes individual’s life on its own way. In my personal view this kind of project and many others of the same kind are bigger reflection in the failure of the system (political and governance) and justification of the needs of individuals desires to change the systems. Many families in Africa are connected with families in Europe and these connections go beyond the monetary support. The sponsors project the natural innate human feeling to help those in need while the beneficiaries feel connected in the ambit of being wanted and loved by a distant friend.

You are a very busy man. How do you combine work and family life?

The truth is that in the society today living and being busy are synonymous. I have one wife? and two boys and I have managed to split my work time and family time very well. Neither work nor family is complaining?. Though at times it gets hectic with work but somehow I manage?

How do you see the future of this program?

Mmmh….this is difficult to answer?….we support very needy children in the society today…some don’t even have families and we are struggling to find them where to stay….so for me a good future is this project in ideal situation should be a future that we don’t need the project. It means a society that everyone has same and equal access to the basic needs of life…education, healthcare, housing and food. That would be a good future for our project. But what i see more practical at the moment is what I can call a bad future. More and more children need help and we are increasingly having problems on deciding which children to add to the adoption whenever we have the opportunity to put more kids.

You are with our organization from the beginning. How do you remember the beginning? Why and how did you decide to be part of it?

In 2001 I was a college student. Then one day around lunch time as I was leaving the gate for lunch, there were two nice white ladies by the gate trying to contact students for a meeting. I was with a friend called Ben and we decided to approach them. The two ladies introduced themselves as Dana and Simona and they invited us for the meeting. The meetings were based on the activities of Humanist Movement and that time we did not discuss much on projects. With the activities of the Humanist Movement we started to build networks and by 2003 the idea of projects started strongly.

By this time I had finished college and started organizing activities and projects in my home village Rusinga. By 2005 it was clear that the projects were increasingly becoming more and specifically distance adoption was growing very first. That is when the idea of having some few people to help in coordinating the network of the volunteers was born. So Dana and the network of volunteers in Kenya proposed Ben and I to take the responsibility of coordinating the projects. That is how I became part of the organization.

Are you still in touch with the students that have finished their studies, thanks to distance adoption? Did the adoption program help them?

Normally education in Kenya you have three years of pre-primary, eight years of primary school, four years of secondary school and then three or four years of college. When we started most of the students were very young and were just starting school. So meaning just now we are starting to have many students who are finishing the colleges and university. But anyway we have those that started the program when they were already in primary school and many of them have finished college and either working or looking for jobs. We have done some video documentary of such cases that can be watched. Many of the students who are finishing the college well without problems are able to change their lives for the better.

One of the cases is 5051-Daniel Opondo-I helped him join the program when he was 10 years and still at that age he was not able to read and write well because most of the times he was not in school. His performance in school was not that very good and but he put a lot of effort in changing his life. He finished high school and joined college to study social work and community development. Now he works part time with the development NGOs and also as a volunteer with us. For me to see him being able now to manage himself and speak very confidently in English is very touching. I can confidently say that yes at individual levels DA is changing lives of many Kenyans.

Our organization is mainly based on the work of volunteers. Can you tell us something about the coordinators team in Kenya? How it works and how many coordinators do we have?

We work with the volunteers almost in similar way you are organized in Czech Republic. We have a team of fourteen volunteer spread across the country (currently we not present in northern Kenya only). A coordinator is normally helping in reaching all the beneficiaries within his/her neighborhood. Each coordinator and also having a team of volunteers that his helping in coordinating the activities on the ground. The team can from two to five members depending on the number of students in the group. Then in the Nairobi office we have four full time employees. The coordinators are directly in touch with the office in solving issues related to the projects.

The coordinators and their teams are facilitated on their direct expenses like transport and communication. This based on each they are handling. The coordinators and their teams handle all the issues connected with the DA directly with the beneficiaries and then report to the office. We have at least two meetings a year for all the coordinators. At times we do three based on the needs. In one of the meeting normally Dana is present if we have confirmation in time that she is travelling to Kenya. In such meetings we access our progress and challenges. Also we use the meeting at the end of the year to draft the shopping list for the coming year and plan well the activities. We also give summaries of all other projects that we are doing in different places.

What do you think about the visits of adoptive parents in Kenya when they meet with the child?

In my own view the visits are offering more strength to the organization. I’m not sure if there is any other NGO in Kenya doing the same now in Kenya but when we started, we were the only NGO that was allowing sponsors to come and visit the beneficiaries. The visits extend the connection beyond the monetary support. The sponsors get the experience that we are not able to transmit through photos, letters and videos. I have seen sponsor breakdown emotionally after the visits. For the children and the families in Kenya it cements the feeling of family. They feel after this visit that the sponsor is part of their family that they can trust and share their family issues with.

For us that are coordinating the projects also it breaks the walls of doubts for the sponsors and the beneficiaries. At times it creates only issue where we have many different families staying in one place. Once they see a sponsor visiting, they also start asking why their sponsors are not visiting and at times it appears to them that it us in the office deciding which sponsor is visiting?. But In general the visits are something that I can encourage more.

What do you think about the letters and parcel that the adoptive parents send to children? Does it have positive or negative impact?

Letters and parcels also create more connections and for those that are getting them it creates a positive impact. For many families these are the only letters they have ever received. Yes it is true that in the beginning we had issues with families that are not receiving the parcels and they even accused coordinators for not handing over the parcels to them with the view that all the students were receiving parcels and the coordinators were keeping some. We also have administrative challenges that come with the parcels.

Sometimes sponsor are sending very huge packages and we have to pay taxes on them which is becoming expensive. Also I think we should agree on the number of maximum parcels sponsors can send… we had initially suggested that it can be maximum three in one year or one parcel per term. We suggest that also send very small packages that are easy to clear with the customs. For things like clothes, shoes and other items, it is better that the sponsor is sending money through extra payment and we are buying them in Kenya. It is more easy and cheaper this way.

Is there anything you want to tell our adoptive parents and to other people that are helping us?

On behalf of all the beneficiaries of our projects in Kenya I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that have sponsoring the projects. It is always very humbling for me that we have sponsors who have never been to Africa and maybe don’t even have the plan to come Africa, but they are supporting a child from Kenya. They don’t know them and they are not obliged to support them, but in them they feel the innate urge to support these needy children. These kinds of acts give high sense of humanity. We have been here of course not without challenges but we thank all those that have been patient and listening to us as we always solve unique cases that occasionally arises. We thank you all….Asanteni Sana!!

Is it interesting for you to meat Czech and Slovak adoptive parents? What do you like in such meetings?

It is always very interesting for me to meet the sponsors and be able to share with them our experiences. I always like mostly when they start asking questions…but very simple questions like what kind of food do we eat? Or do you celebrate Christmas? Or do you have winter?

You are not in Czech for the first time. Is there something that you were looking forward to?

Mostly I was looking forward to seeing friends that I have met over these years that I’m coming here and also to enjoy the goulash with dumplings, my favorite Czech food. I also like very much the meetings in schools and the young children when they ask me questions and their imagination about Africa.

You were in Czech three years ago. Do you see some changes?

I’m very sure there have been many changes but for me it is very hard to notice those changes. Czech is a developed country and I was here when there were good roads, electricity and water in all houses, good transport network. So for me everything was there from the time I started coming. This is the difference for Dana and other friends for example who have been visiting Kenya for the last 12 years. they can see better and very easily the changes in Kenya….those days there were no roads for example to my village. It took two days to get there…now you have roads…not complete but almost complete? so we can take 12hrs to get there. There was no even the idea of electricity when she started coming. Over the years there has been idea and finally now we have electric poles around the island. Actual electricity is almost coming?…..so what I mean to say that in the developing countries it is more easy to notice the changes in the materialistic things than in developed countries.

Can you say some words in Czech?

Yes I know some words which are helpful - Dobre rano, Milacek, Dobrou noc, Na zdravi, Pivo, Dobrou chut, Dej mi pusu, Dekuji. And many others…. And I can also combine the words to make statements “Dobre rano milacek.”

In June, Center Narovinu celebrated its 20th anniversary by organizing a 2-day multicultural festival with a really rich program.

Once again, we would like to thank all the organizations for their workshops and participation in discussions and the performers who made the atmosphere pleasant with their multicultural performances and workshops- they all supported us and our festival for free.

We would also like to thank the organizations and companies who prepared delicious refreshments or donated tombola prizes. A big thank you also goes to the publicists and presenters who helped us promote our event and to all the sponsors who provided us with facilities and services that enabled us to make the festival happen. But mainly we would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with smooth running of the event. It really was a wonderful celebration; thank you for being a part of it! We are looking forward to the years to come.

Visit us at Africa Live Festival, where we are going to have our promotional stand on Saturday, July 25th. You will have an option to buy products from Kenya from our Fair trade. For children we have prepared workshops with African culture.

Workshop “Dressing of African clothes and Life in Africa” – Kids will learn about the ways of dressing in Kenya, they will try typical African clothes, carrying things on the head and tying babies.

There will also be a workshop “Production of beads” – Beautiful colorful jewelry belongs to African culture. Children can try to produce beads for a necklace or a bracelet made of paper.

And for those who like painting, will be certainly attracted by workshop “Drawing mandalas – decorating clothes of African women” – Africa is full of colors and patterns. From mandalas that children draw, we will decorate clothes of African women.

There will be other possibilities for drawing as well – drawing on further an African picture, painting animals, map of Africa or painting masks.
