Thank you for your support to all schools, libraries, institutions, companies and individuals for the wonderful cooperation last year. In the Island of Hope, everything had to be thoroughly sorted according to the age of the children… And then they could start reading and painting beautiful pictures.

“We've been watching Wiclif since he was a little boy who grew up to be a handsome young man with a college degree. He often mentioned that he wanted to do something to help others. I believe he will succeed. We thank him for being able to share joy and worry with him, we thank him for being able to be here for him, for being here with us despite the distance between the two continents. We also thank the Centrum Narovinu for their help, which is meaningful and beneficial for the gradual comparison of differences between people.”

In January 2021 Kenyan government decided that all kids will get back to school and therefore the government made a plan of how to catch up “lost year 2020” in two years, 2021 and 2022. In order to do so, they have changed the school year from traditional three terms to four terms. Most of the kids will attend school more weeks and they will have shorter vacations. Some students in final classes have to do final exams followed by longer vacations. Those students will continue to have just 3 school terms, but with different starting dates of terms.

“The last year of Diana's studies became a bit more complicated, not only for her, but in the end everything turned out well and Diana graduated happily and even has a job offer. And I, her adoptive father, am also overjoyed to bring her to the finish line. We will continue to keep in touch and Diana can still count on my help in case of emergency, she will continue to be my beloved adoptive daughter. And I will follow her footsteps in life as long as I am alive.” Ljuben

“Hope and love is what I've found in real life, and I never thought I'd be able to go that far in terms of educational opportunities. It seems to me that my dreams have come true. I am so grateful to you, Ljubene, for your support, it is amazing that some people are so selfless and become an inspiration to others. Every day I am so grateful for the kindness, compassion, and generosity that you have shown me and people like me. Because you care how many families may have a brighter future. People like you make our world a better place to live, and by choosing opportunities, you are really contributing to a dignified solution to poverty. THANK YOU.” Diana

How I led Diana to the goal

December 17, 2020 was a very important day for Diana, her family and me. That day, Diana graduated from Utalia College in Nairobi, majoring in hotel management and tourism, which was filmed and shared on YouTube. I couldn't miss it and watched it, even though the main participants were represented only by their portraits. What else can be done in this difficult time. While watching, I pondered how it started and what happened in the 10 years during which I supported Diana.

I adopted Diana in December 2010, she was supposed to start high school in 2011, but the previous adoptive parents ended the adoption. In 2015, I physically met Diana and her family (two younger sisters and parents, later father left them) during my trip to Kenya. Since she was in a Catholic girls' boarding school, she was only released for the weekend and my visit lasted only 5 hours. Until my death, I will remember how warmly all the family members received me and how grateful they were that I supported their daughter and sister in her education.

Another important period of Diana's ten-year adoption was her visit in Prague in 2016, where she came for one month in the summer. She had to fly via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines Turkish Airlines on July 16, 2016. That day part of the Turkish army tried to overthrow Turkish President Erdogan and Istanbul's international airport was closed. We were very worried that Diana would not arrive at all. In the end, however, it lasted only one day and she landed in Prague on July 17, 2016.

We adopted her as our own daughter and sister. She got to know our whole family and visited several places of tourist interest in Prague and outside Prague, places such as Kutná Hora, Hluboká nad Vltavou, Český Krumlov. She also visited the African festival at the Dvůr Králové ZOO and helped at the Narovinu Center stand. There, during her stay, she tried sleeping in a tent in the camp and met other people from the organization, Simona, Mirka and Lucka. She also spent a few days in the house of the Narovinu Center employee Lenka and in the house of my older daughter. The director of the Narovinu Center, Mrs. Dana Feminová, even took her to the panoramic cinema at the Prague Exhibition Grounds.

Full of positive impressions and beautiful experiences, Diana flew back to Nairobi. The last year of Diana's studies became a bit more complicated, not only for her, but in the end everything turned out well and Diana graduated happily and even has a job offer. And I, her adoptive father, am also overjoyed to bring her to the finish line. We stay in contact and Diana can still count on my help in case of an emergency, and she remains my beloved adopted daughter. And I will follow her footsteps in life as long as I am alive.

HOPE

From my story line it's one filled with hope and light. I am an example that generosity of an individual  can surely take an individual (person) miles. Rages to riches as some may call it though is still a working  progress. I shall clearly outline from the next line read on.

My name is Diana Nyambura Wahome born in Nairobi, Nyeri Town. Life was really hard, raised by single mother, got to struggle bringing me up since she had no basic education and she was not so much  exposed to life. She acquired a skill for plaiting hair, in Nairobi when she came to work as a house help  for a certain lady. With that skill she was able to put food on the table. Hence my upbringing it has not  always been quite merry. I was always an enthusiast when it came to gaining knowledge. Only recently did I come to term that I  had dyslexia. Yet for so long far as I can remember, I could call myself stupid since I was not grasping  things as fast as I should have.

My first school was called Busara where I got to lay my foundation for my education. I had a problem of  communication and my self-esteem was very low due to such issues. Studying became a big challenge.  Learning could be a challenge since I did not get help much until I met Ljuben. The program of the  Centrum Narovinu and Ljuben saw me through my early education which came as a reliever and I got to  gasp things and I realized I am stronger in matters to do with calculation, finance and accounting. Ljuben  became more than a father figure to me as he could offer moral support and financial support.

With primary school done, I proceeded to high school and this was a whole chapter of my life I was opening. Little did I know it would shape the woman I got to become now. My first high school was in Nyeri. It was fun and exciting in so many ways. I joined so many group clubs more due to the fact that I  got many inter school competitions. They were fun as different schools could showcase their talents  through acting, dancing and stage playing.

As I have stated earlier, without numbers my studies would not have been realized without the help of  Ljuben and the Centrum Narovinu program. I managed high school smoothly as I tried to make all who  were concerned about converting my life proud. I managed to perform well in my high school but other  problems lingered what next? What direction to take? How would I realize my goal? This among many  others were some of the questions that pounded my head as I assumed more responsibility in life. I was  moving from a young girl to being a young lady. Any decision I would take on this period would surely  have a massive impact in my life.

It was during my high school that I went on a trip to Czech Republic that remained to be remembered to  date. The trip is what marked the passion for travelling and I discovered the hospitality industry. A trip to  Ljuben's place if I say it was awesome that would surely be understatement. I enjoyed everything from  the flight experience which was my first time on the plane. The experience being my first time it was a  mixture of happiness and anxiety. I got to meet beautiful people, including Ljuben's family, friends and  also the ladies at the office. This all made my experience much better and fun all thanks to Ljuben.

Later, after realizing my passion for hospitality I proceeded to Kenya Utalii College which is among the best schools when it comes to hospitality, thanks to Ljuben and the program I was able to afford the fee and in 2020 I finished.

Hope and love is something I have come to see in real life, I never knew I will come this far in life leave  alone getting the education. To me it's like a dream comes true. To you Ljuben I'm so grateful for your  support because it shows just how SELFLESS people like you are when it comes to serving and inspiring  others.

Every day I am so grateful for the kindness, compassion and generosity you have shown to me and  people like me. Because you care so many families can have a brighter future. Families can enjoy  nutritious meals and kids can attend school as you reach out to hard working but vulnerable communities.  People like you make this world a better place, and by choosing to give to Opportunity, you are trnly  contributing to a worthy solution to poverty.

THANK YOU.

Diana Nyambura Wahome

“First he sent us cute pictures from his life and the letters were written instead of him by a coordinator from Kenya. From the first grade, he learned English and began writing the first letters. Riki's English was getting better and better, and we could use his letters to get a picture of his family's difficult life and the current situation in Kenya. We were all happier that we were able to support Riki even outside the regular payments. I consider the possibility of supplementary health insurance, which repeatedly helped Riki when he got malaria, to be very important.

He is currently studying very successfully at Kenyatta University in the capital Nairobi at the Faculty of Public Health. He plays football actively, is a big fan of Arsenal, is interested in fashion and is looking forward to starting work after graduating from university. We are very happy to have been able to see how a small, big-eyed black boy grew into a successful, intelligent, responsible and handsome young man. I wish Riki with all my heart that he will be satisfied in life and that he will retain his ability to rejoice in seeming little things.”

Today, Preslyne is a young, pretty, ambitious girl with progressive views on the position of women in society, on the issue of practicing circumcision or forced marriages of minor brides. She is studying pedagogy at Kennyatta University and her ambition is to set an good example for her community. As a future teacher, she wants to educate children who will raise Kenya to a higher level in the future. She makes us, the adoptive parents, very happy with her exemplary diligence, because if I can quote her own words: "Education is the key to our life success".

Education is the key to our life success

Narovinu Center. What are just two words for one, is synonym for solidarity, love, understanding and friendship for the other. The long-distance adoption project is one of the purest human assistance that a person can offer to a person from the point of view of solidarity. Every child should have the right to education, regardless of color, religion or social status. Unfortunately, this is not yet the case on our planet, and for many children, education is a luxury that their parents cannot afford. Each particular person who from this project comes with a medium or even a university education becomes the hope for a better life for the whole family, community, village,or even the entire society.

Every educated person brings the hope for a faster breaking dawn prejudices, for a better position of women in society, for the elimination of myths, fears and traditions that have no place in the 21st century. Every educated person is the hope that there will be no children in the world who experience hunger, because an educated person more often takes responsibility for his life and his future. I am glad that there are still a lot of people today who are not indifferent to the fate of the second hemisphere. The motivation for our adoption in 2004of, then six-year-old, PreslynaLuyai Bwonya, was the desire to try to change the future of one particular person and give her a higher education.

An education she would not otherwise be able to achieve due to a lack of funds in the family. However, the reason why I adopted Preslyn with my friends was simpler. The girl in the photo had shoes on her feet that were at least four numbers bigger. These shoes then practically accompanied her throughout elementary school.

Today, Preslyne is a young, pretty, ambitious girl with progressiveviews on the position of women in society, the practice of circumcision or forced marriages of minor brides. She is studying pedagogy at KENNYATTA UNIVERSITY University and her ambition is to set an example for her community. As a future teacher, she wants to educate children who will raise Kenya toa higher level in the future. She makes us, the adoptive parents, very happy with her exemplary diligence, because if I can quote her own words: “Education is the key to our life success”.

Thanks to the support of the adoptive parent, Brian graduated from the Island of Hope Elementary and Secondary School. He finished high school as our best student with an A- result. In order to start studying at university and have all the necessary expenses covered, he also organized a fundraising collection in Kenya last autumn. He rented a small room near the university and is studying at his dream university.

Brian's medallion, after high school, was also published in last year's bulletin.

Collins is a very nice young man who will tell you what helps him when he is sad… He will introduce you to the whole family, take you around the house and to the university where he studies business. He has known his adoptive parent from photos and letters since primary school and he would very much like to meet him in person. According to Collins' mother, the adoption program was a great benefit for the family, but it helps the most in college, where tuition is really high. The adoptive parent received the traditional name Biáhá from a Kenyan family.

Almost one year before I was born, my parents adopted five years old girl Maureen. Whole my childhood we were making jokes, that I in fact I’m second-born.

From an early age, I knew I had someone like a half-sister in Kenya. Although I was too young at the time to understand exactly how long-distance adoption worked, I knew that our family was basically in charge of Maureen. I knew that thanks to us, she could go to school, paint coloring books with cool crayons and wear nice clothes.

Of course, I didn't understand fully of how important our support for the life of an African girl is, but as a child I realized that the opportunity to go to school and study is unfortunately not obvious to all children.

When I was still in elementary school, I enjoyed looking at the photos Maureen sent us along with the letters and wondering how different people were on the other side of the world. I first responded to her greetings in the letters with painted pictures and later tried to tell about our family in staggering English in a few sentences before I was able to write a full-page letter, to which I usually received an even longer answer.

I enjoyed corresponding with someone who is part of our family, and it didn't matter that she had a different skin color, spoke a foreign language and lived in a completely different country. We learned a lot about each other and about lives in our countries, even things I had no idea about in geography lessons.

I think long-distance adoption has been beneficial to both parties. Maureen graduated from elementary, high school and university, to which she would unfortunately not have access without financial support, unfortunately like most of her peers.

And it still warms our hearts that our family has helped a girl from a poorer family to fulfill her dreams and move towards a successful life.

Hi! I was informed today that my sponsorship has ended but I'm grateful that even if it has ended, we saw each other face to face, spent out time together and also got to know each other better. I promise you that I must graduate this year. I Will send you my photos while doing my attachment and also during graduation. I am so thankful for how far you have supported me and my family during the 18 years of my sponsorship, words are not enough to show you how much I'm thankful and grateful. Pass my greetings to the rest of your family and thank them for their support during the 18 years of my sponsorship. I hope that we will keep in touch,

Maureen, adoptive daughter from Kenya

"Our school has been supporting the LONG distance adoption project since 2007, when we adopted little Muthina from Kenya. We get funding for the adoption by selling pupils' products, the stand with our Christmas and Easter decorations is regularly in our markets in the town. Muthina is an adult girl, as well as like some former students…

I think we have changed not only the live of one "child" from the Kenyan countryside. But we, who have been involved in production and sales, and all those who have bought something from us over the years, have thought at least for a while about the functioning of the world, the things we take for granted, but not everywhere. . ” Bohuslava Dusíková, ZŠ Kladruby

The Distance Adoption project celebrated the age of majority in 2020 – beautiful eighteenths. We were preparing a celebration, but the situation was not good for the celebration… So we celebrated with beautiful online stories. Every week, since November, we have published one story of a supported child and one story “Thank you for your support.” We will introduce eighteen supported children – and we will look at the places where the families live, we will see what the schools look like, where children go, what children do in their free time and what families live on… And in eighteen stories “Thank you for your support” we will introduce you the adoptive parents, volunteers and project supporters who support this children’s education in Kenya.

Dear adoptive parents,

We hope you are all fine. We would like to provide you with up-to-date information from Kenya regarding the children's studies and the sending of packages.

In Kenya, an examination regime has been in force since 18th October – there are only the 4th and 8th grades of primary schools and the 4th grades of secondary schools currently in schools due to school testing and transitions to further levels of education.

In the case of colleges and universities, we continuously pass on information from Kenya to the adoptive parents of the students concerned. Some schools have started online distance learning, some are also starting full-time teaching, so it is different at each school.

We are monitoring and waiting for the situation, because the opening of schools has, of course, brought a lot of dissenting opinions, as well as new cases of infected Covid-19. However, the government lacks information on what to do in such a case and how to protect other classmates and teachers. In Kenya, for example, the quarantine system does not work, etc.

Regarding the sending of letters and parcels to Kenya, please respect, once again, the suspension of the possibility of the sending of mail to Kenya. Packages and letters arrive to the central post office in Kenya, and they then need to be picked up and sorted according to the coordinators who have to pick them up and travel with them to the regions so that they can pass them on to the children. We do not want to unnecessarily expose our coordinators to threatening situations such as travelling by Kenyan public transport. We ask for respect and solidarity. Children and families in Kenya are aware of the limitations of mail and it could well continue without mail for another few months. Thank you for your understanding and your huge support, even in these difficult times.

Wishing you all good health,

Your Center Narovinu

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORT to the Avast Foundation and all the friends of the Centrum Narovinu who have supported medical care to people on Rusinga Island in Kenya in recent months.

  1. Within Together with employees 2020 program, the Avast Foundation supported the operation of the Island of Hope Clinic on Rusinga Island in Kenya with the amount of CZK 50,000 – the purchase of medicines and medical supplies during July and August 2020. Here is a small report of what happened during this period: There were a total of 874 patients at the clinic…  The most common diseases included malaria, diarrheal and respiratory diseases and schistosomiasis (a parasitic disease caused by water of Lake Victoria). Over 2,000 tests were performed. There were a total of 522 HIV / AIDS patients and 2 patients with tuberculosis in the clinic. 37 children were born here, of which 1 twins. 154 children were vaccinated.

  2. By August 5, CZK 138,502 had been collected in the collection. In the first phase, the following was implemented: 1) Purchase of chemicals and production of antibacterial soap for hand washing. 2) Purchase of water canisters with a tap, so that it is possible to prepare more places for washing hands not only within the area of the Island of Hope, but also in the village. 3) Purchase of additional oxygen bombs and accessories to help more patients. 4) Purchase of drugs – especially paracetamol, antibiotics and antivirals. 5) Purchase of available protective equipment – masks, disposable gloves, suits and remote thermometers. 6) Purchase of the fabric from which the face masks began to be sewn. In the second phase, the supply of protective and medical equipment from China was realized. There are 1000 pieces of KN95 respirators, 125 pieces of protective shields, 100 pieces of complete protective clothing, 2,000 pieces of surgical masks and 8,000 protective gloves available for the medical staff of the Island of Hope clinic. The entire staff of the clinic is extremely grateful for this equipment, as protective equipment is lacking in all hospitals, cannot be obtained in Kenya, and the government is totally failing at this point.

The collection is still on, you can send contributions to the collection account in the Czech Republic in CZK number: 107-6829480277/0100, account in Slovakia in EUR: 4001055909/7500 (IBAN: SK1375000000004001055909, BIC/SWIFT: CEKOSKBX), account in the Czech Republic in EUR ( contributions from abroad, SEPA payment in EUR): 35-3076360217/0100 (IBAN: CZ5001000000353076360217, BIC/SWIFT: KOMBCZPPXXX). THANK YOU to all adoptive parents and friends of the Centrum Narovinu, the distribution of food packages is successfully over. ❤️ We are glad that together with the Nairobi office and volunteers in Kenya we managed to react immediately and realize the collection. Buying food was really the most important help we could give to children and families in Kenya during the pandemic.

The first part of food distribution took place during June and July 2020. A total of 1635 children were supported. The food packages also supported 21 teachers at the partner school Ngando Preparatory School and 9 volunteer coordinators who found themselves in need and without any financial support. Total purchases: 10,900 kg of baking flour (Chapati flour), 39,240 kg of corn flour (Ugaliflour), 54,000 kg of corn (Ugali), 5,450 kg of rice, 6,650 l of cooking oil. It is a staple food for many Kenyan households. The purchases were made in 10 slums in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. Also in more than 17 smaller towns and 46 villages throughout Kenya.

The second distribution of food packages took place at the end of September and during October. A total of 1,659 children and their families were given food within the program. Each child on Rusinga Island received a 90 kg bag of corn and 2 liters of cooking oil. Children in other parts of Kenya received 6 kg of rice, 5 liters of cooking oil, 12 kg of wheat flour and 24 kg of corn flour. A total of 6,954 kg of rice, 45,000 kg of corn, 6,795 liters of cooking oil, 27,816 kg of corn flour and 13,908 kg of wheat flour were distributed in 14 slums in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu and in 18 capitals throughout Kenya (Nairobi, Mombasa, Nyeri, Machakos, Kisumu, Nakuru, Naivasha, Molo, Eldoret, Busia, Siaya, Kakamega, Homabay, Kisii, Bomet, Bondo, Siaya, Vihiga).

On Saturday, May 23, our friend Pius Mudiwo Oloo died suddenly at the age of 46. We would like to help the family of our long-term volunteer and express our thanks for his great cooperation and support of Centrum Narovinu.

Pius was from Komenya in the Siaya area and was the eldest son of an 8-member family. He then lived in Nairobi. As a volunteer coordinator of the Distant Adoption project in our organization, he worked for over 4 years and cared for children from different parts of Kenya, especially from Siaya and the Kibera slum in Nairobi.

It was there that he often accompanied adoptive parents who came to Kenya to visit their supported children to, in addition to visiting families and beautiful places in Kenya, also to get to know life in the largest slum. In addition to the Narovinu Center's projects to improve education, health care and overall living standards in Kenya, he also supported the Amani Kibera peace organization.

Pius and his first wife had 6 children - 3 boys and 3 girls. The eldest daughter graduated from high school and would like to continue in higher vocational school as a teacher. She is the only one of the children included in our Adoption program. Other children study at secondary and primary schools (3rd year of secondary school, 7th, 4th and 1st grade of primary school). The youngest son is 2 years old. He had 1 child with the second wife. Then he also took care of 6 orphans for many years, one of the children lived in his family in Nairobi and is in our Adoption program, the other children live with Pius' parents in the village.

Piuse's employer took care of the funeral and all medical expenses.

We would like at least partially support the education of Pius' children within the collection. Therefore, we ask all friends in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Kenya who knew Pius and would like to make this difficult situation easier for the surviving family to send their contributions in any amount to our account. We will collectively support the family in Kenya.

Thank you in advance for your support.Centrum Narovinu

The whole situation in Kenya is quite troublesome – the number of infected people is growing. The schools will stay closed at least till the end of May, there is a curfew in place, capital cities are closed and many people have lost all of their income while there is no social security system in place. On top of that, Kenya is dealing with flooding and grasshopper invasion that have a very negative effect on the harvest. We can´t even imagine, how many families and children in Kenya currently suffer from hunger.

Health and access to basic foods is  is really the most important thing at the moment, which is why we have announced two collections to directly help people in Kenya:

1) HEALTH

Fund-raiser for the Island of Hope clinic, so that we can provide health care in this urgent situation on the Rusinga Island (purchase of protective equipment, oxygen, medicine, disinfection, isolation of infectious patients, etc.)

2) SAFETY FOOD PACKAGES

Fund-raiser for purchase and distribution of safety food packages to families in need in the whole of Kenya – help for all the children and students in our long-distance adoption program and selected families of teachers and other employees of the schools with whom we cooperate and who have found themselves in a critical state due to the blanket closing of schools.

Financial contributions to both of these fund-raisers can be sent to the Czech account in CZK 107-6829480277/0100, to the Slovakian account in Euros: 4001055909/7500 (IBAN: SK1375000000004001055909, BIC/SWIFT: CEKOSKBX), or to our Czech Euro account (for contributions from abroad, SEPA payment in Euros): 35-3076360217/0100 (IBAN: CZ5001000000353076360217, BIC/SWIFT: KOMBCZPPXXX)
