On Tuesday, May 6, 2014, the exhibition Africa Through Uncommon Eyes opened in RIM Gallery. Thanks to the financial support from RIM-CZ and the visitors buying fair trade products, the amount of 27,000 Kč was raised during the first day for development help in Kenya.

The exhibition hall in the headquarters of RIM-CZ, an office chairs manufacturer, was busy from an early morning. Over forty pupils from the Trávníky Elementary School in Otrokovice visited the exhibition during the morning and learnt about the living conditions in Africa, the problems the local peole cope with and the ways how the situation can be improved.

The afternoon program was dedicated to the vernissage itself. The Mayors of Otrokovice, Tlumačov and Napajedla and other guests arrived in the gallery. In the beginning, Milan Nagy and Rudolf Fukal, the executive directors of RIM-CZ, thanked to everyone who helped to organize the event. Then Ms Simona Heřtusová from Center Narovinu received a cheque for 20,000 Kč. The money will be used for building a secondary school on Rusinga Island in Kenya.

The guests showed a big interest in the African products which were offered for sale in a little fair trade shop - stone statuetttes, bowls, necklaces, earrings and other things were selling like hotcakes, earning 5,000 Kč which are going to be sent to the Kenyan manufacturers. The visitors could also buy gift certificates for school supplies, uniforms, bags and other things the children from Rusinga Island need to be able to attend school.

The exhibition in RIM Gallery in Otrokovice (Dr. E. Beneše 1015) is opened till June 30, 2014 on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy the photographs and help to improve the life of African children by buying the handmade products and gift certificates available in our fair trade shop.

When the Partnership (Through Education towards a Universal Human Nation) programme supported by the EU came to the end of its third year, we had to make a step forward and work out a plan aiming to create a space allowing partnership schools to increase their mutual learning and inspire each other.

As children from nursery and elementary schools participated in the project, the experience activities and workshops were very simple and (when adjusted a bit) suitable for all age groups.

A one-school-year plan has been made and devided in three parts: 1. My country and my school; 2. My family – who I am; 3. My wishes. Preparing a celebration. Summary. The schools work on each of the topics for three months while sending outputs to its partner. This way, the schools have enough time for workshops, correspondence with their partner schools, feedback and final evaluation of the outputs from their counterpart's. The end of year is dedicated to a celebrating, summarizing, making discoveries, expressing wishes and presenting the outputs to friends, other classes, teachers, parents and the public.

The teachers play a role of active partners helping the children with the programme. They can also create links and use the topics when teaching different subjects (biology, geography, English, history, art etc.)

From January to April 2014, the schools exchanged their first materials regarding the theme My country and my school (see the photo gallery and videos).  We do appreciate the incredible creativity and enthusiasm on both sides! Thank you!

Ms Dana Feminová visited Kenya again from March 21 to April 7. As usual, she was very busy organizing seminars for the coordinators of Distant Adoption of African Children and Partnership of Czech and Kenyan Schools, handing over the presents sent to the children by their adoptive parents etc. She also visited Rusinga Island and Island of Hope to discuss future of the project and next steps to its sustainability.

See the photographs from her trip in the gallery and watch a new video with Ken Okongo made on Rusinga Island.

Due to a wild storm striking Rusinga Island in the middle of March, lots of houses on Rusinga Island were damaged. Although the water flooded Island of Hope too, all our buildings fortunately survived.

In order to protect them from getting soaked and prevent further damage of the farm, another drainage channel will have to be made as soon as possible to drain water straight to the lake.

It was already the eighth time, when children from Kenya participated on the Czech Radio's art competition  "Drawing online 2013".

The topic of this year was "No fear of spooks" and there wer exibited pictures from the Czech Republic, Kenya, Slovakia, Bulgary, Ungaria, Russia, India, Indonasia and U. S. at the vernissage.

The center Narovinu enriched the vernissage with African workshops, so both children and adults could try wearing of traditional African clothes and carrying stuff on their heads, children also draw some African pictures, masks and animals. Africa can always surprise!

And again, like many times in the past, I am back in Kenya because of our development projects. An unbelievable 13 years have passed since my first trip to Africa and I am not able to figure out how many times I have visited this country so far – 20, 25 times..? Each of the trip was unique and different to the rest. But the beginning of this trip was special in it´s own way.

Three days before my departure – a chain of bad news - terrorist attack at Nairobi, phone calls from my friends checking if I was really coming, speculations on raising religious intolerance/animosity, spreading of war from Somalia to Kenya, confusing news on the role of Israel in the Nairobi attacks, information about my girl-friend who was held hostage for very long 5 hours and escaped safely, fear about my friends and acquaintances in Kenya.

After a few phone calls about the situation in the country I decided to go, but the striking emptiness of the plane to Nairobi strengthen my worries/didn´t add peace to my soul. It´s clear that in today´s world it´s an illusion to think that we are safer when based in Europe, but still... The arrival at Nairobi airport just added to my strange sense of restlessness and insecurity – the improvised unboarding from the aircraft to the airport grounds where the airport staff was waiting holding signs: transit, exit...., huge white tents with USAID signs overly reminding of refugee camps, tin walls with barbed wire covering the burnt parts of the airport, a small improvised baggage claim area at the unfinished part of the airport  and the exit to the parking...

The airport building burnt down 4 months ago and it is not clear yet what had happened. It is necessary to acknowledge, that in the field of improvisation in resolving non-standard situation Africa has achieved mastery/a master level – the airport manages to operate even without its main building. I do even have all my luggage and the customs officer, who questions me on the goods I import (hearing my usual answer – charity collection of toys and writing utensils for Rusinga Island orphanage) looks at me a bit  in disbelieve and  since he knows the island he asks me to give his best regards to the people and lets me go. Finally I sit in the car with Ken and we head to the Dagoretti Corner, so familiar, where our office is located and where I always stay during my Nairobi visits.

Nairobi office and the seminar with volunteers of the  program Adoptions of African children in Kenya

After a rather cold night that resembled winter in Prague (I slept under a thick blanket with  a pullover and warm socks on) the morning is sunny and it´s warm outside, so  I enjoy my  first meeting with the Nairobi team – Ken, Ben, Brenda and Caroline in the garden under the palms. During a couple of hours we try to discuss all the details of the Adoption project, it´s operation and prepare a three-day workshop for volunteer teams all over Kenya.

At the end of the day full of information and discussions everybody leaves and I continue with preparation of the last materials – evaluation questionnaires, games, activities - until late at night. 14 teams are going to arrive from Nairobi, Mombasa, Kakamegy, Rusinga Island, Kauti.... in total about 55 people. We all meet at Limuru and due to various hold-ups and delays – e.g. document print-outs and needed purchases of things for the seminar it is the first time ever,  that I – the only European, arrive as the very last person - a true revolution after 13 years of endless waiting for others! Who said that changing deep-rooted habits was difficult? :-)

I arrive with Ken just in the moment when they are all already in the garden fully absorbed in  games – a group of 55 people from different areas of Kenya, from different tribes – speaking different languages, Christians, Muslims, youth who were recently “adopted children” themselves  together with ladies and gentlemen over 50, those who are with us from the very beginning with those who have joined the volunteer teams just a months ago... they are all together like kids in joyful and playful atmosphere.

This great group variety is reflective of a huge success of the past 13 years and brings hope for future – it´s an example showing that joint interest, cooperation and communication with respect are unifying, possible and enriching for everybody. The ability to be attentive to things we have in common rather than to those that separate us is an art as well as a  huge challenge of today´s society. The first day of the seminar was devoted to evaluation, and thanks to the work in groups, to evaluation questionnaires and discussions we were able to summarize the main achievements, motivations, themes/topics to be resolved, problems and questions to be clarified.

So tomorrow we will continue with the numerous details of the organisational process, allocation of responsibilities, definition  of communication channels and cooperation and updates on news and various development projects of Narovinu Centre. I can´t resist sharing one sidelight/funny thing – at the reception just before going to bed  we were all given a hot water-bottle to warm our beds up! So this the way of warming myself up when travelling to Africa!

Hello,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Basic school Mokrá (Wet) – district Brno-rural area as late as the beginning of the summer school holidays (sorry for the delay). We would like to share with you our great experience – one of the nicest for me personally during this school year – which was an event called “Run for Africa.” We organized the event in order to raise funds /school fees for our adopted boy Vincent.  In the previous years we managed to obtain funds through paper recycling, but this year one of my colleagues had an idea to raise the funds by “running”. She found the sponsors from the local school area, we made posters and off we went.

For me it was a marvellous experience for one more reason – the weather forecast was pretty awful and from the very morning till about 2 pm we were seriously thinking about cancelling or postponing the whole event to the next week. On the top of everything just before the event start (2 pm) there was a severe thunderstorm with huge hailstones and we had to move everything from outside inside, thou we hadn´t managed to save everything and many things were left in the rain. We were watching the havoc with my colleague for over 10 minutes and trying to figure out a plan how to cancel the event. But all of a sudden a group of kids appeared at the sports ground wearing raincoats, some just with umbrellas and started to run. So the decision was made, we didn´t have to worry anymore and the event had started. There was another shower after about 30 minutes followed by sunshine which stayed with us for the rest of the afternoon – till 5 pm. For me this was a proof that if you are guided by a good will, everything is possible. Obstacles turn to advantages – thanks to the storm the air cleared, the dust disappeared which made the running easier.

So this is the experience I wanted to share with you. That is down to your organization that we are able to support a good thing, to get inspired and create various similar activities and events like this one. Both children and parents enjoyed the event very much and I think that we managed to create an atmosphere that felt really good. The parents had a chance to talk among themselves and kids experienced a relaxed and non-stressful time at school.

Moreover, even in today´s financial crisis we were able to raise an unbelievable amount of 30,000 CZK.  There was a donation for every round the kids completed, but the kids were so motivated to get as much money as possible, they kept running rounds, more than what their parents and sponsors had presumed and so the end we had to send a message to parents and  sponsors asking them to donate only the amount they could afford.

I also attach the final report that summarizes everything in a well arranged way.

I wish you all a lovely summer!

Event report:

On May 22, 2013 something extraordinary happened at the sports ground of the Basic School Mokra. Around 2pm in the middle of rain, just a few minutes after a hailstorm, a couple of daredevils, undaunted by the weather, appeared at the school´s sports ground and launched the beneficiary event in support of our adopted boy Vincent Opunda from Kenya. The sports ground gradually filled by runners and during the following 3 hours the total number reached 156 of them. They completed 3 871 rounds in total, which made 774,2 km. There was a donation fee of 1 CZK for every completed round, which was funded by the sponsor – a company called TASY. If the runner had managed to find his own sponsor, he raised even more money. The energy booster was provided by a Restaurant U Zbojnika (At the brigant) and the village called Mokra-Horakova. Radek Meluzin lent us the sound system equipment which was operated during the event by Ondra Meluzin.

Vincent is 12 years old. He is the youngest of the 8 kids in the family. We adopted him 5 years ago and have already received 15 letters from him. We support him every year via the Narovinu Centre by raising funds for his school fees in the amount of 7200,- CZK.

And a few more numbers. One round at the sports ground measures 200 metres. There were in total 156 runners who supported the event, out of which 124 came from our school pupils, 15 were preschool kids, 9 adults and 8 teachers. 80 runners had their own sponsor. The best runner was the athlete from the 6th grade – Honza Unger, who completed 111 rounds, which is 22,2km. Four other runners Zdeněk Novotný – 5th grade, Tom Novotný -  4.A, Bedřich Horný -  4.A a Klárka Horná - 3.B completed more than 100 rounds. 21 runners managed to complete more than 50 rounds. The general sponsor – TASY Company donated 5,000 CZK and the sponsor of Klara Zenozickova from 6th grade, a company called SEMO, donated 4,000 CZK. Thanks to sponsors´ generosity we managed to raise 32,166 CZK in total during this event.

The Run for Africa was a real success despite the weather. Many thanks to all who supported this event – the runners, the organizers and the sponsors.

During the weekend of May 25-26 a regular meeting of volunteer coordinators took place at the premises of the Centre Narovinu. 19 people in total participated from all over the Czech Republic. The program was similar to those of the previous years – the project coordinators gave updates (summary) of various projects and informed about the news, changes and future plans.

We reviewed jointly the annual report and summarized the achievements of the last year. Also we brainstormed the future direction we want to take.  The atmosphere was very pleasant, the team of the Centre Narovinu has expanded by several new members – a big THANK YOU to all for their support and help. We are looking forward to further likeable meetings.

The picture Angel by Radan Wagner, who gifted it to Centre Narovinu, was auctioned off for unbelievable 52 000 CZK. This money will be used for further development of Community Centre Island of Hope on the Rusinga Island in Kenya.

We will inform you about actual use of this amount in the feedback just after the realization.

Although this picture is travelling to its new owner, you will be able to see Mr Wagner´s exhibition in the Prague City Centre (Klimentská 46, Praha 1) until the 30th September. It is definitely worth seeing.

We want to thank all the people, who enriched that special evening by their presence and support of our effort to help children in Kenya.

March was full of courses for volunteers – two subsequent evenings took place in Prague (18th and 19th March) and a weekend course took place in Chocerady on the 23rd and 24th March. 12 people participated in Prague evenings and 8 people in Chocerady course.

The atmosphere was very action. There were debates about situation in Africa in general, problems and possible solutions, development projects and their value for future, particular projects of our association and possible involvement of volunteers.

Thanks for big interest and offer of help – we have new coordinators for project Adoption of African children – project of remote support, collaborators for help with propagation, sending out letters from children and administrative help, help with projects in schools etc. We highly appreciate offered help and are looking forward to more new meetings and collaboration. Next Prague course is planned for June, so if you are interested, write to us.

I decided to adopt a Kenyan child after X-mass 2012, thanks to the article about Petr Kostka's visit to his adopted child in Uganda.

Because the school year in Kenya starts in January, things had to be speed up, which we managed together with a Czech coordinator. All papers were ready in a few days, so Florence could start school after the New Year.

I have to admit that I was chosing the child considering her or his place of living, since I knew that we were going for holiday to the coast south of Mombasa in February and I was already thinking about a personal meeting.

The organization of the meeting was a bit more difficult, since we found out that Florence wasn't living with the family of her late mother's sister anymore but she had moved to her grandmother into a village near town Voi, about 200 km from Mombasa. Because it wasn't our first visit of Kenya, I refused the proposed option of Florence's visit in our hotel, and we decided to rent a car and visit her in the village where she lived - Mwatate.

We bought some presents in the Czech Republic, mainly stationery, colored pencils, simple English books with pictures, a pencil box, a school bag, a T-shirt. I was afraid that the level of English in books would be too low for Florence, but later we found out that she could hardly understand us and even her aunt's language skills were barely enough for basic communication.

I bought some tiny hair accessories as well but school children were not allowed to have long hair, therefore she could wear the fancy butterflies only pinned to her dress. In Kenya, we also bought some basic food for Florence's family and some ballpoints for her schoolmates. Before our departure I had the idea to print the letter which I had sent to Florence at the beginning of January which contained some basic information about our family with plenty of pictures of the family, the place where we live, and Prague.

And the idea was a good one since Florence didn't have the letter yet and she liked it a lot. Thanks to this letter we started our mutual communication.

On the appointed day and time the Kenyan coordinator for Mombasa, Dorice, waited at the hotel (since she was not allowed in). The journey to the town Voi took nearly four hours. Just to get to the ferry took an hour, delay on the ferry, then the passage through the overcrowded streets of Mombasa, which were full of buses and trucks.

Finally, we got to the main road connecting Mambasa with the capitol Nairobi.

There is only one lane in each direction and plenty of trucks, which transport supplies from Mombasa harbor to the inland.

In Voi, we had lunch and refreshed ourselves a bit. We turned off from the main road to the west to Tanzania borders. The asphalt road soon changed into a dirty one and our guide started calling hectically.
We found out that she didn't know where exactly the village was and that she called Florence's aunt. It was around midday, children were on their way home for lunch and we understood that she was trying to find out whether we were on the right place according to colors of their school uniforms.

Finally, we found out that Mwatate is a pretty big village which we wouldn't have missed. Lydia in her white dress stood in the center of the village with a cell phone in her hand. She got into the car and we went to school.

A huge football field in a moderate hill (with a hole every here and there), on the top of the hill two buildings. Each doors represent a class, the fifth is ours. Children are at home for lunch, there are only few of them at school. Florence is at home too. We peep into the headmaster's office, the deputy is chatting with us for a while, I notice a bookcase full of used textbooks covered with the same tawny dust which is everywhere around. Later, we go to the class.

We guessed that each class was for about forty children but when it has filled and we can see that there were four children at each desk, we have to double this number.

After a while there comes Florence in her school uniform, which is a bit bigger then would fit her, most likely to fit her longer. She is tall for her age, and slim. We get acquainted in front of the blackboard, it's rather embarrassing

I took out the letter with pictures; she loses her shyness watching the pictures. But we have to hand out sweets; Florence happily takes care about it. Meanwhile the class filled in, other children are in windows.
We say goodbye, all of us walk to the car and we go to Florence's place. The house is about 4 km from the school, through the whole village.

It stands in the middle of a corn field, according to local standards it is rather luxurious, built from blocks, with a roof from corrugated plate, electricity and a tank for rainwater standing in the tidy yard.
We park the car in the field under a tree, the grandma greets us heartily, we give her the box with food immediately.

She leads us to the tidy living room, decorated with Christmas cards, calendars and election posters. We sit on the sofa; the conversation is a bit difficult since the grandma can't speak English.

I give Florence the presents; it seems to me that she is happiest for pencils and clothes.
We view the book and I show her how to glue English words and pictures. There comes her cousin, about 20-year-old boy who brings water which he offers to us. We are rather happy that we don't get any food as we probably would be a bit afraid of eating it.

Florence at least tells us that she wants to be a police officer, she likes learning English and she likes cats. Then the adult's conversation switched to coming election and candidates. At the end of our visit we take pictures of all of us in the yard next to a pile of dry corn and the tank for rainwater.

Just before taking pictures, Lydia polishes Florence's school shoes and her grandma holds a bag full of corn from the field. Everybody comes with us to the car, there we chat for a while and then we have to say goodbye. We hope that we return to Kenya the next year again and meet Florence and her family again.

In Voi we give Dorice money for the bus ticket back to Mombasa, since we want to extend our trip for a visit of the near National park Tsavo. The bus leaves in a couple of minutes, we are happy that she doesn't have to wait too long.

The visit of Florence, her school and her family belongs among the strongest experiences of our holiday. It is possible that Florence wouldn't be able to attend school without my help and without her; I wouldn't see life in Kenya so close. We enriched each other and I hope we will continue it.

What is the life of girls in the new building of the orphanage like? What new is growing in the school garden? What do the kids do in their free time? What are the future plans? We are bringing news and actual information from the Island of Hope from our co-ordinator Joash.

New Orphanage

At the beginning of February children moved to the new orphanage building. Girls are happy and satisfied because the new building is only for them. Boys stayed in the original building and are happy too because their rooms are not overfull and they are not obliged to share their beds.

The new building has dramatically changed the life in Island of Hope. Before we had space for only 32 children, now there are 44 kids in the orphanage (23 boys and 21 girls) in total. The capacity of the boys' section is 32 and the girls' section 40. This means that we still have space for other children. The demand is still much higher, therefore we try to carefully evaluate situation of each individual child to select carefully those that need the place in orphanage most urgently.

You can get the impression of the situation in the photo below.

School garden

You can find actual photos attached. School farm supports diet program a lot. Right now the soil is being prepared for new sowing season. This season floads occurred in Russinga and therefore the harvest was not very good. We have harvested bananas, which make breakfast of kids more nourishing. We had around 30 papaya trees but the floads have destroyed most of the plants. We have only 15 left over now. Besides, we plant cassava (manioc); root vegetable resembling our potatoes, which you can see in the pictures (behind papaya trees). Manioc belongs among kids' favourite breakfast dishes.

School and kinder garden

Children are busy with finishing the first term of the new school year as you can see in the photos.
We are enclosing also a video from the Island of Hope which was made in November 2012 and which brings closer life and atmosphere in Rusinga Island a bit at least.

Was it contribution? Surely, for children in Africa.

Within the project called „ Through Education towards a Universal Human Nation“, two TV spots were prepared, filmed and broadcasted. Their topics came from two Millenium development goals. One of them is the access of primary-school education to everybody). And the next is assuring of permanent environmental sustainability - access to clear drinking water.

Finances for the media campaign came from EU grant. All Czech TV channels met our demands and thanks to charitable prices we could broadcast 260 spots during all December (60 spots on TV Pětka, 40 spots on TV Óčko, 60 spots on TV Barrandov and 100 spots on TV Prima including channels Prima Cool and Prima Family). TV viewership was incredible and your reactions very positive and favorably evaluating our intention. Thank you.

Apart from television network, the campaign took place also in multiplex Cinestar. Totally there were broadcasted (in a week from 13. till 19. December) 2 141 spots in Prague, Hradec Králové, České Budějovice, Jihlava, Liberec, Mladá Boleslav, Opava, Olomouc, Ostrava, Pardubice, Plzeň and Zlín. The spots were viewed by 97 106 visitors in total.

At the same time, audio-spots with the same topic were broadcasted on radio stations (Radio Impuls and RockZona). Press releases, informative newspaper and magazine articles were sent out, and our activities were presented in various TV shows.

During a week from 24. 12. to 30.12. , there was a banner campaign at www.femina.cz and www.living.cz with 374 901 displays and 263 clicks on our webpage.

In total our site viewership grew to 12 290 visitors in December (in November the number was 3 779). In the period between December 25 and 31 the number even exceeded 1000 visitors a day.

The numbers are very high so how did it reflect in our projects in particular?

By the end of December several tens of new adoptions were arranged. New volunteers offering help with our activities showed up. We have full diary of activities at schools till February. Plenty of schools decided apart from distant adoption support to extend their help in Kenyan a Czech schools partnership project.

Thanks to all for your support and help. We evaluate media blitz as very successful with its outcome reflecting in the next months and years.

If you would like to support us in the future - you can download banners, adverts, spots or topics for interesting articles at our webpage.

We are thankful for all your support without which would not be possible to realize so many projects.

It has been 11 years now since two friends of mine, the owners of CK Brenna travel agency, started to support the distance adoption project of Centrum Narovinu. In 2002, they became adoptive parents of then six-year-old Philomena Aoko from Nairobi. While being on holiday in Eastern Africa at the beginning of this year, I had a chance to visit the girl and her family.

Alhough the decision about visiting Philomena had been taken shortly before our departure, we had no problems to organize it. Three e-mails exchanged between us and Mrs Feminova were all we had to do. We told her the approximate date of our visit and in return we received the contact to the local coordinator responsible for arranging visits. The original date of our visit was set on Monday, January 7, the first school day after a long (I think one moth's) holiday. We were supposed to meet Philomena at school in the morning and then spend the afternoon with her family. But later we had to change our itinerary and finally the only time we were able to see the girl was Sunday afternoon.

We phoned Ben, the coordinator, just three days before the visit was to be paid. Still it was not a problem to put it off for another day. He picked us up from the hotel on Sunday morning at nine to drive us to the place. We were really surprised he arrived on time because  our previous experience made us expect he would be at least one hour late.  Here in Africa, time is somehow less important than in Europe. Ben, whose Czech vocabulary was surprisingly good, first helped us to buy some sweets for Philomena's five siblings and then we set off.

Our journey from the city centre where we were staying to Philomena's home at the suburbs of Nairobi took about half an hour. Philomena and a local coordinator were waiting for us in the middle of the main (and only) street surrounded by a jumble of huts made from logs, timbers and sheets of corrugated iron. All of us were a bit shy at first but before we managed to walk through the maze of narrow streets taking us to her home, the ice started to melt to get broken completely when we met her mum who gave us a warm and wild welcome. She grabbed the bag with sweets without hesitation and rushed into the house to check what we had brought. It didn't take her long to examine the stuff and in a few minutes she could show us into the house just as good hostesses do.

The first and main room in African houses is usually a living room. This one looked the same as the others we had seen here, just it was smaller and its ceiling and walls were made from corrugated iron. But we were pleased to see it was very clean. In the centre of the room, there was a low table with a sofa and two or three armchairs. The walls were covered with curtains and decorated with photographs of children, plush toys and kitsch pictures. A BRENNA ball which Philomena got from her adoptive parents when she was a little girl was hanging from the cealing right in the middle of the room.

Soon the house became very crowded. There were eleven of us, even Philomena's uncle,  her mum's brother and apparently head of the family, arrived to talk to us.  Mum was given some money for food and household and Philomena got her present – a watch we bought for her. Unfortunately we could not hand her the parcel with presents and a letter from Brenna girls because our friend who was supposed to bring it had called off his journey. But we assured the family the parcel would arrive by post soon so noone seemed to be disappointed or sad especially when we promised Philomena's mum there would be a small gift for her in it too.

Then we talked mostly about Philomena, about things she likes, her school results and a job she would like to have one day. She asked a lot of questions about her sponsors because they had visited her before so she already knew them personally. It was obvious that she and her uncle appreciated the chance she had been given through adoption at distance. Education is not a thing that children with social background like hers take for granted and without this chance, the seventeen-year old girl would be uneducated, jobless and with no prospects for future. Finally we were offered a slice of sweet toast bread and cup of tea with milk which we could not refuse.

Although, compared with other places in Africa, Nairobi has quite a pleasant sort of climate, it was very hot inside the house so after about an hour we apologized and went to see  Philomena's grandma living on the other side of the slum right next to a church built – of course - from corrugated iron where a Sunday mass was just being served. While we were walking along the streets, local people were greeting us with their friendly smiles. Grandma's hut, devided into two rooms by a curtain, was much less clean than Philomena's house but grandma herself was a very friendly, outgoing and fun-loving person. A few photos were taken and in the early afternoon we were accompanied back to our car and asked to give their warm greetings to Philomena's adoptive parents. Our visit was over.

Ben gave us a lift to the bus station and helped us to find a bus to Mombasa. We paid him one thousand shillings (about 220 Kč) for petrol, wished him good luck in Czech and left, feeling our  visit to Philomena had given to our journey a special flavour. And looking back now, we are sure it was one of the  most important moments of it. If you have an adopted child in Africa and you have not met them yet, I do recommend you to do so. It will surely be an experience you will never forget. You can make it a pretext to visit this beautiful, wild continent.
